Shirley Lorraine Starry was born at home on December 17, 1926, in Buffalo, Minnesota, to Edward and Ruth (Bailey) Starry. Shirley was baptized into faith on January 9, 1927, and was confirmed on April 6, 1941, at the Bethlehem United Church of Christ. She grew up in Maple Lake where she graduated high school with the class of 1945. Shortly after Shirley was united into marriage to Elwood James Heberling on August 22, 1946, at the Bethlehem United Church of Christ. Together they raised their family in Maple Lake. Shirley was a devoted homemaker for her family. She also worked at Maple Lake Public Schools as a cafeteria cook for nine years.
She was known for her love of nature where she would spend time with Elwood hunting, fishing, gardening, or simply admiring nature's beauty. Shirley always made her family and friends feel welcomed and special. She looked forward to their visits and often times could be found preparing special meals including meatloaf and lemon pie for them. She also enjoyed bird watching, playing cards, reading, puzzles, and knitting. Shirley's unconditional love for her family will be missed the most.
