Robert Ernest Ecker was born April 24, 1951, in St. Cloud to Ernest and Ruth (Leppa) Ecker. After college, Bob moved to Estes Park, CO, where he lived and worked at the YMCA of the Rockies. He ran the roller rink and the bowling ally at the YMCA; the roller rink was named after Bob shortly before his retirement in 2017.
