Rebecca Susan (Anderson) Nies

Rebecca S. Nies, age 45, of Afton, formerly of Maple Lake, died Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at M Health Fairview - St. John's Hospital in Maplewood.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2023, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Maple Lake with Rev. Culynn Curtis officiating. Burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, near Little Falls. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday as well as one hour prior to the service on Monday, both at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the church. 

Rebecca Susan Anderson was born June 15, 1977, in Madison, Wisconsin to Gary and Esther (Bos) Anderson. She grew up in Madison, and graduated from James Madison Memorial High School in 1995. Becky then furthered her education at St. Cloud State University, where she obtained both her Bachelors and Masters Degree in Special Education. While attending St. Cloud State, Becky met a local St. Cloud guy, Sean Nies. On August 5, 2000, they were united in marriage in Middleton, Wisconsin by pastor Stan Klyve who was a family friend. They made their home in Maple Lake, where they also raised their daughter, Tira. For 15 years, Becky worked for the Maple Lake Public Schools. She was committed to creating a loving and fostering environment for the students she taught. She was blessed to be able to teach them, and they to be taught by her. She gave all of herself to teaching and worked closed with the Lions in helping with PBIS and other community outreach programs that impacted the youth. In 2017, Becky and Sean moved to Afton to be closer to her father. Although they moved, Maple Lake felt like home. 

Becky enjoyed attending musicals and plays, which often meant sneaking out of the house without Sean or simply leaving him behind, since he did not share the same enthusiasm as she did. Becky loved to converse over cups of coffee in the morning, even if she had a different view point of the topic being discussed. Becky's creative talents were displayed through stamping, which she often did with her friends and colleagues. She was also able to let her spontaneous side show. The most memorable would when they packed their bags for their 20th anniversary, and decided where they were going once they got to the airport and picked one of the least expensive flight destinations. While on board to Charlotte, they made their itinerary and hotel reservations. 

Becky is survived by her husband of 22 years, Sean of Afton; daughter, Tira of Circle Pines; father, Gary Anderson of Afton; brother, Matthew (Joanna) Anderson of Bath, England; sister, Laura (Roy) Anderson of New Glarus, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, friends, colleagues, and beloved students. She was preceded in death by her mother, Esther.
