John David Ironside was born January 4, 1934 in Ortonville, MN. Known as Toby, he was one of four children born to John and Erdna Ironside. He was baptized into the Christian Faith on May 13, 1934. Toby grew up working in his father's blacksmith shop and graduated from Chokio High School. He joined the military; serving for 2 years in the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Dunwoody Institute and started working for IBM as a Customer Engineer in 1960.
On July 12, 1969, Toby was united in marriage to Dianne Steinke at Salem Lutheran Church in Greenfield, MN. Together, they were blessed with two children, Kimberly and Sheri. They made their home in the Sugar Lake area near Annandale.
Toby was an outdoorsman that enjoyed fishing and hunting all of his life; especially following his retirement from IBM after 33 years of service. Many hunting memories were made with his daughter, Sheri, and son-in-law, Nate. He loved his hobby farm with cattle, horses, and other animals and crops. He also enjoyed traveling and going on cruises with his wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Spending time with his family, especially quality time with his grandchildren, was his largest priority.
Toby is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Dianne; children, Kim (Russ) Ferrell and Sheri (Nate) Budde, both of Annandale; four grandchildren, Kate and Austin Ferrell, Paige and Peyton Budde; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Patricia Steinke; special friends, Melissa and Rick Riesgraf and Preston Fobbe; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The urn bearers will be Toby's grandchildren. Kathy Murphy will provide the music for the service. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Annandale.
