Clarice Marie Pigg, age 98, of Maple Lake, died March 17, 2022, of natural causes.
At Clarice's request, no service is planned. In lieu of flowers, plant a flowering shrub or tree in her honor.
Clarice Marie Mares was born Oct. 5, 1923 in Maple Lake township to Isabelle and Ted Mares and grew up in Maple Lake. She graduated from Maple Lake High School and worked in Minneapolis until she met and married James Donald "Don" Pigg during World War II. He served in the Navy. He died in 2000.
She subsequently lived in California, Missouri, Oklahoma City, Wichita, KS, and Missouri again before moving back to Minnesota in 1954. She worked outside the home on occasion but was mostly a homemaker. She loved gardening, flowers, birds and all animals, especially cats. She also loved to dance and said if she'd had a career, she would have been a nurse or a professional dancer. She loved to laugh and tell or hear "funny stories."
At 98 years old, Clarice never stopped going, keeping her house, taking care of her cats, and feeding her birds. She was known for her cooking, especially her southern fried chicken and apple pies. An invitation to her home for dinner was something to be celebrated. A voracious reader, she had, over the years, educated herself on many topics and could hold up her end of a conversation whether it was about nature or about politics.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Doris Lepp, Jeanne LaMere, Eileen "Tootie" Mavencamp, Audrey Sieg and Dona Risdall; and one brother, Glenn Mares; as well as her daughter-in-law, Sandy Baker.
She is survived by her daughters, Andrea (Ron) Vargo, Linda (Rick) DuVal, Cindy (John) Adams and son, Dale Pigg. She also is survived by six grandsons and one step-granddaughter, as well as their spouses and children.
