Roger Allen Hendrickson was born on December 12, 1936, in Madison, Minnesota, to Samuel and Sarah (Johnson) Hendrickson. He grew up on a family farm in rural Montevideo as the youngest of eight children. He spent his early education years in a rural one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade, earning the distinction of Salutatorian in a class of two students. He then attended and graduated from Montevideo High School.
Following his graduation, Roger honorably served in the U.S. Army, where he was primarily stationed in Germany. After returning from military service, he ventured to Minneapolis, where he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Kodesh, at a dance, an encounter that would lead to a beautiful union. They were married on September 9, 1961, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
Roger enjoyed his career as a laborer with Labor Union #563 in commercial building construction. His contributions included the Litchfield Courthouse and the iconic Mall of America. After retiring from construction, he worked part-time as a custodian at the Annandale Middle School, where he enjoyed working with both the staff and students. Roger was a proud member of the Kingston American Legion and Christ Church Newman Center in St. Cloud.
Outside of work, Roger had a passion for hobby farming and found joy in cutting hay and spending time on his tractor. He was an ice fisherman and hunter, and he liked to express his creativity through scroll saw work and woodworking. He loved to play cards with family and friends and listen to polka music. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to tell a good joke brought joy to all who knew him. Most notably, he cherished his time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchilden, sharing stories, wisdom, and creating memories. Roger was lovingly known by many nick-names, including Slick, Snuffy, Al, Swede, Ol' Dead Eye, Gramps, and PaPa Rog.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Ann of South Haven; children, Steve (Cindy) of Watkins, Kenny of Waite Park, and Karen (Greg) Smith of Ramsey; grandchildren, Mellissa (Nate) Miller, Danielle (Max) Johnson, Steven (Erin) Hendrickson, Sarah Smith (Zack Hajjali), and Emily Smith (fiance, Jacob Cooper); great-grandchildren, Ryder, Piper, Jack, Axel, Beau, Cameron, Kaia, Nora, and Calvin; sister, Edith Hendrickson of Montevideo; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Janet Hendrickson; great-granddaughter, Eleanor Hendrickson; brothers, James, Sheldon, Lloyd, and Alton Hendrickson; and sisters, Helen Johnson and Deloris Roggatz.
Roger's family will serve as urn bearers. Cindy Knutson, Mary Knisley, Sarah Smith, and Emily Smith will provide music for the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial and Cremation Services of Kimball.
