Obituary

The Rev. Dr. Robert E. Mortvedt, age 92, of Buffalo left this world to be with our Lord in Heaven on December 21, 2025.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo with Rev. Trevor Skorburg and Rev. Culynn Curtis will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place in spring of 2026 at Stordal Lutheran Cemetery in Dells Rapid, South Dakota.

Robert Eugene Mortvedt was born on September 17, 1933, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, to Ernest and Clara (Halvorson) Mortvedt. Robert graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1951. He was a proud graduate from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Robert went on to serve honorably as an officer and pilot in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959. This period of service instilled in him strong sense of duty and community that he carried throughout his life. In 1962 he married the love of his life, Becky Petersen, in Racine, Wisconsin. Together, they nurtured a loving family that included their cherished children Clare and Jacob.

As an ordained minister for 61 years, Robert touched countless lives through his ministry. He served 36 years in 5 parishes and as an interim pastor in eight congregations, seven in Nebraska and one in Minnesota, always leading with compassion and wisdom. His passion for teaching Bible study classes was evident, as he inspired many with his profound understanding of scripture and the boundless love he shared.

An avid reader and sports enthusiast, Robert found joy in both the pages of books and the thrill of watching his favorite teams. His legacy of faith, kindness, and compassion will forever resonate in the heart of those who knew him.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Becky Mortvedt; his children, Clare (Jeff) Swenson of Buffalo and Jacob (Karen) Mortvedt of Roseau, MN; grandchildren Nathan (Liz), Nicholas (Janessa), Steffane, Katelynn, Skyllar and Delaynna; great-grandchild Jayme, Gabe, Kinley, Jaxon, Remi, Elias, Cruz, Hazel and Rose; siblings Audrey (Duane) Mortensen of Lawrence, KS, and Jeanne Steinharter of Fort Worth, TX; sister-in-law Marlene Mortvedt Fort Collins, CO; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Mortvedt, sisters Lucille Ramstad, Marilyn Terilliger, and Carole Petersen.

Robert's grandchildren will serve as urn bearers. Arrangements entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Annandale.
