Mary Hortense Carl, born January 15, 1921 to Katherine "Kitty" Marie (Hanson) and Coleman Josiah Carl in Sioux City, IA; moved to Omaha NE during the Great Depression. She grew up surrounded by siblings: Russell, Kenny, Fallon, Catherine Ann and Jim.
August 29th, 1941 Mary and Jim Kastl were wed in Omaha. Soon after Jim was inducted into the US Army Air Corp Mary continued to live with the Kastl's, then with the Carl's, when their first child Steven James was born. With the birth of Tom then Chris, they headed north to Minneapolis: Winter 1949. Four more children followed: Mike, Ann Marie, Matt and Ken.
Mary quickly became the "CEO of Kastl Industries" overseeing the production of school cookies, Halloween costumes, Girl Scout activities--an original "soccer mom." She loved "wild animals" and soon found their home filled with ducks, turtles, snakes, gerbils and hermit crabs! After the animals left and the children grew up (in that order), Mary and Jim spent their winters in Mesa AZ, and each summer at Sugar Lake. Love abounded for her 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by husband Jim, infant daughter Mary, sons Steve & Tom, grandson Josh, brothers J. Russell, Rev. J. Kenneth, R. Fallon & Jim, sister Catherine Ann Nielson, daughters in law Dawn Kastl & Bridget Reynolds.
