Marian was born in nearby Buffalo, Minnesota on November 21, 1925 to Arthur and Hilda (Gunnarson) Erickson. She graduated from Annandale High School as Valedictorian at the age of 16 with the Class of 1941. She received her Master's Degree in Business and French from the University of Minnesota and taught Business, Model Office and French in Orr, Wadena, and Nashwauk, Minnesota High Schools from the late 1960s through the mid 1990s. She married James Hiner on November 24th, 1946 and they eventually settled on One Pine Lake near Ely, Minnesota where they raised their two children: Susan (1953) and Eric (1954). In 2006, Marian decided to return to her childhood hometown of Annandale.
Marian was a voracious reader and an avid fisherwoman. She was a determined puzzle solver, enthusiastic Twins fan, and enjoyed quilting in her retirement years. She liked to play ping pong, chess, and Chinese Checkers when she could find willing, unsuspecting victims, I mean partners, and she showed no mercy on even her grandchildren! Her wild rice casseroles, hand-grated coleslaws and marinated Copper Pennies (carrots) were family reunion campout famous!
She is survived by her daughter, Susan (James) Haynie of Lincoln, California; her son, Eric Hiner of Carver, Minnesota; grandchildren, Derric (Shana) Haynie, Katrina Haynie, Ronald (Tessa Anttila) Hiner and Karl (Emily Mercer) Hiner; step granddaughters, Monica Saralampi, Megan (Norm) Saralampi Kimball; great grandson, Austin Haynie; step great grandsons, Oro Saralampi and Theo Anttila; step great granddaughter, Josephine Kimball; younger brothers, Harlow Erickson of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Ronald Erickson of Walker, Minnesota and Glenn (Iona) Rozenberg of Annandale, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and other family members. Marian was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, Vernon, younger brother, Lyle and younger sisters, Betty Svegal and Janet Curtis.
