Obituary

Luvern E. Hinz, age 96, of Kimball died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the VA Medical Center, St. Cloud.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 28, 2011 at Ostmark Lutheran Church, 32721 680th Ave, Watkins with Rev. Joe Midthun officiating.  Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Kimball and at the Church one hour prior to services.  There will be a prayer service 5 p.m. Thursday and interment will be 5 p.m. October 30 at the Kimball Cemetery.  Memorials are preferred to the St. Cloud VA Medical Center.

Luvern Edward Hinz was born November 30, 1914 in Crystal, ND and at the age of four moved to Kimball Prairie with his family, parents Edward & Lily (Haas) Hinz, brother Sidney and sister Viola (Hinz) Elliott who all preceded him in death.  His younger sister Marsella (Hinz) Mackereth was born in Kimball and now lives in Annandale.

Luvern was a 1932 graduate of Kimball High School and spent the rest of his years living in Kimball.  In 1936 he went to work at Engel's Store on Main Street which he purchased in 1947 and ran as Hinz Grocery until 1957.  In 1936 he met Margaret Fowlds who was a teacher in Kimball and they were married on August 4, 1938 in New Effington, SD; she preceded him in death on July 1, 1987.  They had four children Nancy, Mary, Jim and Jack.

In 1941 he became the area's first livestock artificial inseminator.  In 1944 he became a member of the U.S. Navy and after WW II he ran the Strieff Dairy Farm & delivered milk to Kimball area residents.  In 1958 he built Aqua Lanes bowling alley and later a self serve car wash.  Starting in 1965 Luvern was one of several interested people that began selling shares, purchased land south of Kimball and formed Kimball Golf Club.  His passion later in life was golf and you could find him at the golf course several times a week until the age of 95.  He loved bluebirds, building & maintaining bluebird houses for many years.  Another of his loves was Willow Creek Park at which he planted many trees and helped maintain well into his retirement.  Luvern served on the Kimball City Council and the Kimball Area Schools Board of Education.  He was a member of Kimball Golf Club, member & past Commander of Kimball American Legion Post #261 and was a 57-year member of Ostmark Lutheran Church at which he served in many capacities.  He was a former member of Kimball Rod & Gun Club and Kimball Fire Dept of which he had served as Chief.  Luvern loved his friends, his family, and Kimball.

He is survived by his children Nancy (Ron) Thomas of New Hope, Jim (Cathy) Hinz of Sequim, WA, Jack (Pam Jette) Hinz of Plymouth, sister Marsella Mackereth of Annandale, grandchildren Elizabeth (Thomas) Gibson, Ann (Thomas) Budnick, Kris (Thomas) Dokken, Melissa (Miller) Riesgraf, Mark Miller, Mike Miller, Christy (Hinz) Case, Jenny (Hinz) Schmidt, Kim (Hinz) Bryant, Cory Jette Hinz, Abby Jette Hinz, son in law Larry (Karen) Miller, 16 great grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Margaret (Fowlds) Hinz, daughter Mary Miller, brother Sidney Hinz, sister Viola Elliot, and special friend Audrey Knutson.

The pallbearers will be grandchildren and the music for the service will be provided by Jon Mackereth and Barb Eno.  The arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care of Kimball.
