John (Jay) Houston Helm, 76, of Annandale died of heart failure on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family.
A Gathering of Friends will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at the Southbrook Country Club in Annandale, from 2 pm to 4 pm.
John is survived by his wife Loretta; his daughters Victoria (Sean) Cameron of San Francisco, California, Marie (Mark) Kirchner of Clearwater, and Jennifer (George) Helm of St. Paul; his sons Dan (Connie) Helm of Smith Valley, Nevada, Joe (Cindy) Helm of St. Joseph, and JJ (Cindy) Helm of St. Cloud; 11 grandchildren, and a great grandson.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.
John was born in Tower, Minnesota, on April 25, 1931 to L. Merritt and Inez (Wiseman) Helm. From 1951 to 1954, he served in the Army during the Korean War. He married Loretta Tauer on June 16, 1956 in South St. Paul. John received his BA degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1957. He worked for the California Youth Authority in Los Angeles and Sacramento from 1963 to 1976, when he retired from the State of California due to health concerns. He settled his family in Annandale in 1977, where he worked part-time as a pre-sentence investigator for the county courts until 1981. He also worked as a Realtor and real estate appraiser until he retired in 1996. John enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Annandale Food Shelf.
