James E. Smith, age 59, of South Haven died Sunday, October 14, 2007 after a heroic four year battle with the side effects of Leukemia.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 19, 2007 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Annandale with Rev. Marilee Benson officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Annandale and one hour prior to the services Friday at church. Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
James Ellsworth Smith was born June 24, 1948 in St. Cloud to Forrest and Evelyn (Ferrier) Smith. He graduated from Annandale High School in 1966 and from St. Cloud State University in 1969 with Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Jim married Sally Hahn on November 27, 1970 in Litchfield. He worked as a Conservation Officer with the Minnesota DNR for 33 years, retiring in 2003 as a Lieutenant. Jim was active in many local lake associations and law enforcement organizations. He was a true steward of the environment, rescuing many orphaned and injured animals and practicing recycling before it was common. Jim also served as a mentor to many younger DNR officers, he taught fire arm and snowmobile safety classes. His greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his daughters and granddaughter.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters, Tara (fiancAC., Bryan Thompson) of Annandale and Leah (Jamie) Allman of Brooklyn Park; granddaughter, Sylvia Allman; sister, Ann (Michael) Carter of Minneapolis; many nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents preceded him in death.
Sharon Planer will provide the music for the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care, Annandale.
