Hazel L. Dokken, age 94, of Golden Valley, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Colonial Acres Health Care Center in Golden Valley.
Memorial Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2011 in the chapel at Colonial Acres Health Care Center, Golden Valley. Pastor John Satterberg will officiate and music will be provided by Charlene Hasz. Graveside Services will be held 2:15 p.m. Monday at Grace Southside Cemetery, Annandale. Friends may call from 1:30 – 2:00 p.m. Monday at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale.
Hazel Lillian Dokken was born in rural Aneta, ND on March 12, 1917 to Ole and Minnie Almaas. She lived on farms and attended rural schools through the grades; in 1936 she graduated from Oak Grove High School in Fargo, ND. In Minneapolis, Hazel attended Lutheran Bible Institute and graduated from the Vocational School of Nursing in Fargo. She worked as a nurse in Moorhead for nine months before marrying Justin Dokken on June 7, 1942 in McVille, ND.
Justin served a church in Malta, MT for four years and Hazel worked full time in nursing. It was there that daughter, Myrtle, was born. In 1947 they were serving in Cook where daughter, Ruth, was born. Hazel worked together with Justin in church work, serving in Sunday School as primary leader and in youth groups. She counseled at summer Bible camp through the years. She loved to bake and entertain with open houses for congregations where they served. Together, they served the Lord for over 50 years with the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Hazel and Justin retired and moved back to Alexandria where they had served the Covenant Church before. They remained active in church work and sponsored the Young at Heart group and served several interims. In 1995, they moved to Covenant Manor where she was happy and enjoyed meeting new friends. Hazel loved to bake, sew, crochet and work with crafts. Everyone liked her lefsa and her humor.
Hazel is survived by daughters Myrtle Anders & her husband David of Wichita, KS and Ruth Johnson & her husband, Arlen of Waite Park; five grandchildren, John, Mark, Philip, Charlene and Craig; ten great grandchildren, Bret, Eric, Lakyn, Ean, Kinsie, Justin, Carolyn, Andrina, Kennan, Cameron and Kaylyn; four step grandchildren Debra, Sandra, Karen and Jim; twelve step great grandchildren, Melissa, Justin, Matthew, Nicole, Heather, Brittany, Amie, Zachary, Jesse, Brannon, Seth and Cecily; five step great great grandchildren Haley, Brooke, Noah, Isaac and Nora; sisters-in-law Janet and Ruth Dokken; and many nieces and nephews. Proceeding her in death were her husband Justin; parents Ole and Minnie; sisters Geneva Eliason, Edna Eversvik and Myrtle Almaas.
