Harold P. Schmitz, age 85 of Kimball died Sunday, January 27, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2008 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Kimball. Fr. Frank Tomasiewicz will officiate. The burial will be at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Watkins. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-10 a.m. Friday at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Kimball. Parish prayers will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Harold was born April 11, 1922 in St. Martin, MN to Leo and Emily (Burg) Schmitz. Harold served in the army during WWII from 1945 through 1947. He married Dorothy B. Johannes on October 3, 1944 in St. Nicholas. Following his service he and Dorothy farmed in Luxemburg Township for 10 years. They moved to Watkins, MN in 1957 after they purchased the Playland Ballroom in Kimball, MN and enjoyed the business and their participation even after their son Dennis and wife Janyce bought the ballroom in 1982. Harold always enjoyed visiting with all the friendly customers and played Tic-Tac-Toe whenever he had a chance. You could always find Harold because he whistled while he worked. He especially enjoyed family visits and looked forward to seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Wat-Kim-Valley VFW Post 5460 and Kimball American Legion Post 261.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Daryl of Lincoln, CA, Patricia (Jeffrey) Thull of Plymouth, Dennis (Janyce) of Kimball, Ronald (Robin) of Troup, TX and Robert of Loomis, CA; sisters, Bernice Gulley and Viola Keul of Cold Spring and Eileen (Dominic) Warzecha of Sartell; brother, Erwin of St. Cloud; brother-in-law Leo Vossen of Cold Spring; sister-in-law, Marie of Albany; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Brian Donald; an infant baby girl; brothers, Gilbert and Werner; sister, Lucile Vossen; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann.
The family is deeply grateful for the care and support Harold received from CentraCare Hospice and all their wonderful staff.
