Elwood J. Heberling, age 86, of 9708 Ireland Ave NW, Annandale died Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale with Deacon Ron Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Annandale. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel in Annandale.
Elwood James Heberling was born at home near Clearwater Lake on March 27, 1921 to Alfred Elwood and Clara (Cleveland) Heberling. He grew up in that area and farmed with his father. At Annandale High School he played basketball and he played baseball on the Maple Lake Town Team. El married Shirley L. Starry on August 22, 1946 and made their home in Maple Lake. He worked for his father in law at Maple Lake Produce, drove school bus, and was a City of Maple Lake police officer. He was a Wright County Deputy Sheriff for 22 years retiring in 1978 at which time he and Shirley moved near his homestead near Clearwater Lake. For the next 16 years they delivered the Drummer. For his entire lifetime, El was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Annandale; three children and their spouses, Barbara & Gary Collins of Buffalo, James & Carol of Buffalo, Richard & Sharon of Maple Lake; brother, Alfred Jr. & his wife Stella of Annandale; 7 grandchildren and 1great grandson. An infant sister and brother Glenn preceded him in death.
The pallbearers will be Arnold & Larry Heberling, Doug & Alan Starry, Dave Rathje, and Mike Ryall. The music for the service will be provided by Sarah Goelz and the arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care of Annandale.
