Obituary

Clifford `Shorty` Callander, age 87 of Rural South Haven died Monday, April 16, 2007 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2007 at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Kimball. Burial will be in Maine Prairie Cemetery, north of Kimball. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service, Friday at the funeral home.

Clifford `Shorty` Callander was born December 3, 1919 in Kingston Township, rural South Haven to Severt and Julia (Larson) Callander. At a young age, he worked a variety of jobs, like threshing in North Dakota and cooking at lumber camp for his uncle, Arvid in northern Minnesota. In July of 1952, he married Arlene Merrick in Garner, Iowa. Clifford helped build Playland Ballroom in Kimball, where he became a bouncer. He farmed with a small herd of dairy cattle in Kingston until 1967. When his parents died, Clifford and Arlene moved to the Callander homestead in rural South Haven. During that period of time, he worked for the Kingston Township and also worked on the Dave Myllykangas Saw Mill in North Kingston. He also helped build numerous cabins and houses around the west side of Lake Francis. In retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He loved to spend time with family, attending numerous sporting events and musical concerts of his granddaughters.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; children, Randy (Penny) Callander of South Haven, Lori Hill (special friend, Mark Madson) of Northfield, and Robbie (Judy) Callander of South Haven; brother, Hilbert of Mankato; sister-in-law, Nancy of Brooklyn Park; brother-in-law, Bob Scott of Grove City; granddaughters, Aimee, Kristie, Tesslynn, Susan and Raelynn; and many nieces and nephews. His parents; seven brothers; and three sisters preceded him in death.

Pallbearers will be Mark Madson, Debbie Nystrom, Paul Callander, Vaughn Zoller, Darrell Young and Steve Mohling. Honorary pallbearers will be Aimee and Kristie Hill, Tesslynn and Raelynn Callander and Susan Peterson. Arrangements are entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care, Kimball.
