Obituary

Clayton E. Morningstar, age 88, of Maple Lake died Friday, February 4, 2011 at the VA Medical Center, St. Cloud.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Maple Lake with Rev. Peter J. Martinson officiating.  Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Annandale.  Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Maple Lake and at the Church one hour prior to services.  There will be a prayer service 7 p.m. Monday.

Clayton Elmer Morningstar was born August 24, 1922 in Illinois to Lewis and Fannie (Kauffman) Morningstar.  He honorably served in the Army Air Force during WW II and following his plane being shot down & parachuting out, was held as a POW for some 14 months.  Clayton participated in several Air Offensives:  Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe.  He was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and the European, African & Middle Eastern Service Medal.  He married Marilyn Annette Vaughn on July 17, 1945 in Goshen, IN and they lived at LaGrange, IN prior to moving to rural Maple Lake in 1963.  Clayton farmed and also worked construction.  He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church & Maple Lake VFW Post 7664 and a charter member of American's Ex-Prisoners of War.  He enjoyed his family's activities, fishing, hunting, reading, and sports.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Maple Lake, sons & their wives Brent & Patricia of Maple Lake, Craig & Donna of Annandale, Randy & Darla of Annandale, sisters Lela Miller of Elkhart, IN, Esther Oswald of Sarasota, FL, sister in law Dorothy Morningstar of Goshen, IN, 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by sons Duane & Armin, sisters Fern Hartzler, Mabel Sharick, & Flossie King, and brothers William, Ora, Titus, Art, Jesse, Melvin, & Floyd.

The pallbearers will be Duane, Chad, Travis & Alex Morningstar, Jeff, Kyle & Kris Jackson, Chad & Sheila Barsness, and Mike & Natalie Cox.  The arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care of Maple Lake.
