Beryl Planer died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Annandale Care Center
Beryl is survived by daughters Rebecca Planer of Minneapolis, Jane Schulzetenberg (Jack) of Annandale, and son Norman G. Planer (Sharon) of Annandale; grandsons Peter Schulzetenberg (Judy Engel) of Minneapolis, Jay Schulzetenberg (Maria) of Annandale, and Michael Planer of South Bend, IN; granddaughter Jennie Planer of Brainerd; sister Vernis Adams of South Gate, CA; nieces Janet Nelson (Denny) of Three Forks, MT, Susan Gertz (Bob) of Falcon Heights, MN, Mary Munson (Ken) of Lafayette, CA, Nola (Holt) Bertelson of Salem, OR, and Judy (Al) Gray of Lake Havasu City, AZ; nephews Robert Lacher (Jean) of Brookings, SD, Richard Lacher of Northome, MN, and Don (Patty) Strecker of Longmont, CO.
She was preceded in death by husband Norman J. Planer; parents Ivy and Jasper Gray; sisters Alice Marquardt and Marian Lacher; brothers-in-law Earl Marquardt and Joe Lacher; sisters-in-law Doris Strecker and Nona Laurel.
Beryl Gray was born in Westport, MN, on September 30, 1915, to Ivy (Boobar) and Jasper Gray. She grew up in South Haven and Fair Haven, and attended school in South Haven through ninth grade, then went with her classmates to attend Annandale High School, where she met Norm Planer, the love of her life. She graduated in 1933, and attended Hamline University for one year, but graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Medical School with a B.S. degree in Medical Technology. She worked for a group of doctors in Little Rock, Arkansas, for several years before returning to Annandale, where she married Norm on September 20, 1941, at St. Mark's Corinna Episcopal Church on Clearwater Lake. Beryl and Norm lived and worked on the Planer family's "Silver Maple Farm" through thick and thin. (Norm died on April 12, 1971.)
Beryl was active in Vesta Chapter, Eastern Star; worked at local blood banks and school immunization clinics; was a Girl Scout leader; was the "altar guild" and a staunch supporter of St. Mark's Corinna and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. (and a card-carrying member of the Society for the Preservation of the Book of Common Prayer). When the offspring went to college, she worked part-time at the Buffalo Hospital lab, and, after Norm died, Beryl worked with her sister, Vernis, as a medical technologist for several winters at St. Francis Hospital in Los Angeles. She served on the board of the Buffalo Retirement Center, and later was a founding board member of the Annandale Care Center, where she "came full circle" as she eventually became a beneficiary of the kindness and lovingly professional care there for her last years.
Interment will be next to her beloved Norm at Woodlawn Cemetery in Annandale.
