Arlene B. Smith, age 85, of Annandale died Friday, August 1, 2008 at the Annandale Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the Silver Creek Community Church, Silver Creek with Rev. Tim Overweg officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Creek Township, Wright County. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale and one hour prior to services at the Church. There will be a prayer service 7 p.m. Monday.

Arlene Bethel Smith was born September 2, 1922 at Epheny, SD to Ernest and Mary (VanPelt) Freiberg. In 1936 her family moved from South Dakota to Maple Lake and Arlene's schooling began in the Vandergon School and ended when she graduated in 1941 from Maple Lake High School. She married Edward Smith, who was a member of the United States Army at the time, on November 6, 1942 in Oak Harbor, WA. After WW II they farmed and raised their family of six children in Corinna Township. Upon retirement they sold their farm to their son and built a house nearby on Sugar Lake. Ed preceded Arlene in death on August 23, 2005. She was a member Silver Creek Community Church where she sang in the Choir & Silver Praise and taught Bible School. Arlene enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, her flowers, her garden, baking, and traveling.

She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Gene & Fran of Maple Lake, Ernie & Carol of Annandale, Wen & Deloris of Farmington, Charles & Mary of Annandale, Douglas & Michelle of Maple Lake, Linda Smith & John Komarek of Monticello; brother, Glen Freiberg & his wife June of Red Wing; sister in law, Verona Freiberg of Eugene, OR; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her husband Edward, great granddaughter Isabelle Smith and four of her brothers Albert (Alice), Awalt (Theresa), Omar (Betty) and Harold preceded her in death.

The pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin, David, Chris, Ethan, Brady, & Matt Smith. The honorary pallbearers will also be grandsons, Shawn, Gabriel, & Chad Smith, and Jamie Elletson. The music for the service will be provided by Orma Lou Jacobsma, organist and Jane Mol, soloist. The arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care of Annandale. Arlene's family wishes to thank the staff of the Annandale Care Center and North Memorial Hospice.
