Roger H. Newman, age 79, of Annandale died Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the Minneapolis V.A. Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Kimball with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place 10:15 a.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, assembly area 5.

Roger Harold Newman was born June 27, 1938 in Owatonna to Harold and Ida (Peterson) Newman. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Askov and graduated from Askov High School with the Class of 1956. Roger served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, Cuban Crisis and Berlin Crisis. He served on many ships including the USS Picking, USS Mazama and USS Bordelon. Roger retired from the Navy in 1977 as a Chief Petty Officer. After retiring from the Navy, Roger lived in Moncks Corner, SC; he was employed at a shipyard in Charleston, SC working on civilian and military naval vessels. In 2000, Roger moved to rural Annandale. He was a member of the Kimball American Legion Post 261. He enjoyed wildlife, fishing, gardening, cooking, watching television and listening to old time music on the RFD channel.

Roger is survived by brothers and sisters Allen Newman (special friend Helen Key) of Clearwater, Richard (Kathy) Newman of Elk River, Leona (Phil) Rairigh of Bend, OR, Harry (Sherri) Newman of Buffalo and Linda Bourasa of Moorhead; sister-in-law Pat Newman of Casper, WY; brother-in-law Herb Marquette of Annandale; close friend Sammie Hicks of Berea, KY; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Ida Newman; sisters Pearl Miner and Judy Marquette; brothers David and Jerry Newman; brother-in-law Paul Miner; and special friend Rosie Scrughan.

Full military honors will be provided by the Ft. Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad. Brian Dingmann will serve as the Life Tribute Celebrant. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Kimball.
