Richard V. Barberg, age 82, of Howard Lake, formerly of Casco, WI, died on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Augustana Lakeside Care Center in Dassel with family at his side.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Howard Lake with Rev. Jacob VanPernis officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Cokato Finnish Cemetery in Cokato Township. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the church. Visitation will continue on Friday one hour prior to the service.

Richard Vernon Barberg was born September 22, 1935 in French Lake Township to Wayne and Lillian (Lantto) Barberg. He grew up in Cokato, was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cokato and graduated from Cokato High School with the Class of 1954. Dick enlisted in the Army during the Korean war and served as a Tank Commander at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Ft. Hood, TX and Ft. Knox, KT. On August 24, 1957, he was united in marriage to Rose Marie Lorentz at the First Presbyterian Church in Howard Lake. They moved to Menomonie, WI while Dick earned a degree in Industrial Arts and Drivers Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Rose and Dick moved to Casco, WI for 36 years, where Dick taught at the Luxemburg-Casco schools. Upon retirement, they built a home on the property of Rose's family farm in Stockholm Township near Howard Lake.

Richard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Howard Lake and the Howard Lake American Legion. He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Luxemburg, WI, the Casco Community Club and a charter member of the Casco Lions Club. He served as a volunteer Fireman of the Casco Fire Department for over 30 years. Dick was a proud fan and stockholder of the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed woodworking and doing yard work with his John Deere tractor. He loved trees, having planted and transplanted many of them over the years. Dick also enjoyed his time spent cutting and milling lumber in Alexandria with his cousin, Dan.

Dick and Rose enjoyed traveling together. In 1966, they purchased a camper and took a 3 week vacation with Rose's parents to California. They traveled to Germany and Central Europe in 1976. They visited Sweden and Finland in 2006; while there, they were able to see where the Barberg family was from and met many relatives. Their last big vacation together was to Ireland and England in 2007.

He is survived by his wife Rose; daughters Kimberly Barberg and Cheryl Paicius, both of San Jose, CA; brother Warren (Doreen) Barberg of Eau Claire, WI; sisters-in-law Shirley Barberg, Eva (Royal) Moulton, Joyce (Herb) Smith, Sue (John) Tapio, Shirley (Marty) Javurek and Trudy (Kelly) Clausen; brothers-in-law David (Jean), Dale (Tunnie), Albert (Marlene), Eugene (Terry), Leo and Michael (Cher) Lorentz; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law BJ Paicius; brothers Alvin and Edsel Barberg; and sister-in-law Fern Barberg-Holt.

Angela Schloo will provide the music for the service. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Maple Lake.
