Mildred Marie Shadduck, died on her 100th birthday, Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at her home in Annandale, Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Annandale United Methodist Church with Rev. Ruth Hograbe officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. before the service.
Mildred was born April 4, 1917 in Valley Creek near Afton, Minnesota to Ernest and Betsy (Swanson) Hayne. She grew up in Grantsburg, Wisconsin and St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul with the Class of 1935. She worked as a secretary at the Federal Land Bank, the Minnesota Association of Crippled Children and Adults, and during WWII, the Office of Price Administration (OPA) within Emergency Management and as a legal secretary to William Prosser, former head of the U of M Law School and then General Counsel at the OPA. After WWII, Mildred worked for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, now 3M.
On May 9, 1946, Mildred was united in marriage to Nobel Shadduck, an attorney she met at the OPA and returning Navy veteran, in St. Paul. They built a home on property where Nobel was born on Clearwater Lake near Annandale and resided there for 51 years. Some time after Nobel’s death, she moved to Annandale and resided there at the time of her death. She was always an active member in the Annandale United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Annandale Improvement Club and volunteered at Pioneer Park in Annandale. Mildred enjoyed sewing and knitting and was an avid reader. She was an expert in growing violets. She was a city girl who moved to the country and was deeply involved in planting trees and cutting wood, raising Springer Spaniels, planting gardens, selling Christmas trees, making maple syrup, cleaning fish and trying to point four boys in the right direction.
She is survived by three sons & their spouses Robert & Charlotte of Annandale, John & Danuta of Menlo Park, CA and James & Debra of Eden Prairie; daughter-in-law Kathryn of Grand Forks, ND; seven grandchildren Susan Vergin, Deborah Janiak, Bonnie Shadduck, Melissa Schaefer, Kristin Fahey, Amy Miller and Katie Olson; seventeen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mildred is preceded in death by her husband, Nobel; parents Ernest and Betsy Hayne; son William Shadduck; granddaughter Laura Ann Shadduck; and brothers and sister, Earl, Grace, Gordon, Homer, Rodney and Malcolm Hayne.
Mildred is also survived by special friends, neighbors and caregivers, Valoris Ferrell and Lorraine Benson.
