Melvin B. “Mel” Niewind, age 79, of Annandale, died peacefully at home with his wife by his side on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Annandale with Fr. George Kallumkalkudy officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Annandale. Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Melvin Bernard Niewind was born August 9, 1938 to Anton and Blanche (Hageman) Niewind in Roscoe, Minnesota. He graduated from Paynesville High School in 1957.  On June 30, 1962 Mel was united in marriage to Marlene S. Kummer. He has lived in Annandale for the past 50 years where he was employed by Jack & Jill and the Marketplace as produce manager for 45 years, retiring in 2015. Mel was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church. In his spare time, Mel enjoyed camping, fishing, feeding the birds, playing cards and polka music. Above all, Mel loved his family, and took great pride in his work.

Mel is survived by his wife Marlene of Annandale; daughters, Sally (Jim) Demarais of Annandale, Sandra (Eric) Golliher of Watkins, Theresa Niewind of Big Lake and Ashley (David) Olson of Annandale; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mel was preceded in death his parents Anton and Blanche Niewind, brothers, sisters, and granddaughter Samantha.

Pallbearers will be Nick Demarais, Dave Olson, Dan Olk, Butch Olk, Mandy Christophersen, Nate Christophersen and Bradley Zander. St. Ignatius Music Ministry will provide music for the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Annandale.
