Elaine was born to Emil and Laura (Pick) Nilson on January 18, 1934 at home in Southside Township, the third of twelve children. She graduated from Annandale High School in 1952 and the Lutheran Bible Institute of Minneapolis in 1954. She married Arnold Ernest Gunderson on September 24, 1955. This marriage was blessed by a son, David Arnold, and through the gift of adoption, a daughter, Dawn Elizabeth. Arnold and Elaine farmed south of Annandale, and on July 3, 1973 Arnold was killed in a farm accident. Elaine was again blessed in marriage on May 13, 1984 to Conrad Engen, the father of Jeff and Connie, to which Elaine embraced and unconditionally loved her entire life. Throughout her life Elaine was employed at various occupations and always displayed her Christian faith. She loved housekeeping and preparing meals for family and friends. She was a dedicated and gifted quilter, and her interior painting talents were shared at churches, community centers and homes across the state.
