Edna M. Matthees, age 94 of South Haven, died Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Annandale Care Center.

Memorial Services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Annandale with Rev. Thomas Queck officiating. Burial will follow at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday, both at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the church.

Edna Mary Matthees was born December 23, 1922 in Deer River, MN to Robert “Dewey” and Louise (Bruder) Phelps. She grew up in Hibbing and graduated from Hibbing High School with the Class of 1941. After graduation, Edna moved to Wells, MN and lived with her aunt and uncle Jack and Linda Bruder and cousins John Bruder and Dorothy Brannon. She joined First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wells and was baptized and confirmed at the church on December 21, 1941. She graduated from Mankato Beauty College in 1942 and opened Edna’s Beauty Shop in Wells. The shop was ruined as a result of a tornado, so Edna moved to Minneapolis and opened another beauty shop on Lake St. & Hennepin Ave. On August 29, 1957, Edna was united in marriage to Raymond Matthees in Milbank, SD. They lived and raised their family on the Matthees family farm in South Haven.

Edna was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Annandale where she was active with the Zion Busy Needles and LWML. She was also a member of St. Luke’s Senior Quilters, Clearwater Lioness Club, Clearwater American Legion Auxiliary Post 323 and the Camp Friendship Auxiliary. Edna enjoyed quilting, crocheting, embroidering, gardening, bird watching and spending time in nature.

She is survived by her two children John Raymond Matthees, Sr. & his wife Krista of South Haven and Mary Hemminger and her husband Michael, Sr. of South Haven; five grandchildren John Raymond Matthees, Jr. & his wife Leslie, Char Rae Matthees-Reid, Michael Hemminger, Jr., Nick Hemminger & his wife Katie, and Blake Hemminger & his wife Wendy Guerra; seven great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Lauren and Jack Matthees, Lauren Medinger, Camryn and Taylor Reid, and Sophia Hemminger; sister Emily Jerome of Superior, WI; and brother Robert Phelps & his wife Cathy of Sparta, WI. Edna is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters Geraldine Curtis, Lorraine Puhek, Bertha Porter, and MaryAnn Puhek.

Edna’s grandchildren will serve as urn bearers. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Annandale.
