He graduated from Annandale High School with the Class of 1951. While in high school, Don was a standout 4-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball, track, and baseball, which, along with his future coaching career, landed him as the first inductee into the Cardinal Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame in 2007. After graduation, Don continued his education at Gustavus Adolphus College, graduating in 1956 with a degree in education and coaching. He was later inducted into the Gustavus Adolphus Hall of Fame. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the building and cemetery committees.
