Dominic "Dobby" Messina, age 82, of Duluth, died June 11, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital with his family by his side.
Funeral Services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 17 at Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 N. 11th Ave E., Duluth. Rev. Michael Messina and Pastor Kathryn Nelson will officiate. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Saturday, June 16 at Bell Brothers Funeral Home, 601 North 56 Ave West, Duluth and one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the church. Spaghetti dinner will follow at the Dry Dock, 2820 Midway Road, Duluth.
Dominic Richard Messina was born in Duluth to Michael and Anna (Verva) Messina on March 5, 1936. He grew up in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld with the Class of 1954. Dobby was united in marriage to the love of his life, Dianne Roginski, on May 18, 1957. Dobby, along with his best friend, Don Long, owned and operated Don and Dobby's Friendly Tavern, Bridge Bar and Cafe', and Hamm's and Olympia Beer Distributing. Dobby was a member and former Exalted Ruler of the Duluth Elks Club 133. He was a member of The Duluth Curling Club, having won the Bagley Trophy in 1970.
Dobby loved to play and watch baseball and softball; having played on many competitive teams and making many lifelong friendships. He also loved the game of cribbage; teaching his grandsons through many at-home cribbage tournaments the mastery of the game. Dobby coached little league baseball, enjoyed bowling, curling and most of all spending time with his family and friends.
Dominic is survived by his children Toni (Tom) Kasell of Duluth, Michael (Mary) Messina of Maple Lake and Mark Messina of Duluth; grandchildren Brian (CedRiece) Hamski, Steven Hamski (fiance Michelle Marnich), Michael R. Messina, Anthony Messina, Dominic Messina, Joshua Messina, Derek (Katherine) Messina and Stephanie (Paulino) Messina-Hernandez; two great grandchildren Anthony Messina-Hernandez and Pierce Hamski; and brothers & sister Rev. Michael (Sandy) Messina of Ocala, FL, Richard (Catherine) Messina of St. Paul and Michelle Herbst of Phoenix, AZ. He is preceded in death by his wife Dianne Messina; parents Michael and Anna Messina; brother John Messina; and an infant sister.
The pallbearers will be Dobby's grandchildren. Jim Pospisil and Mark Hakes will provide the music for the service. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services.
